I have a temperature measurement kit (PIC12C672) that uses a direct connect. A series 22K from the PC TX to the PIC, but straight from the PIC to the PC RX. I really don't depend on the sales and reasoned that I could either redesign or pull the kit if there were problems. After some 18 months, I have sold some 250 kits with no complaints. My confidence in taking this approach was bolstered a bit in looking at the NetMedia BX24 (much improved Basic Stamp) design which uses an onboard UART (Atmel processor) with CMOS inverters. That is, TTL logic levels on the RS232 side. I have sold thousands of these BX24s with no problems related to improper RS232 levels. Hope this helps. Peter H.
