To the EEs in the crowd - speak slowly, I am a programmer.

I have a circuit that is comprised of a number of components
that require a 5V supply and use 5V signal lines (such as
a MAX232).  I would like to integrate a DS1337 (real
time clock) but its max Vcc is 4V and the MAX V on the
signal pins is 4.5V.

Am I going to be forced to split the bi-directional
signal line and use diodes and a voltage divider?
