This thread seems to be of so much interest to so many people, I couldnt resist sharing my opinion. IMHO, about the best universal IR decoder was developed by a gentleman named Terry Weeder. It was featured in Electronics Now, and then again in Nuts and Volts. The article also was extremely lucid in decsribing the various issues reading an IR stream, especially when the protocol is not known (PWM? PPM? etc.) This was a truly universal decoder (notwithstanding the potential incompatibility on account of non-standard carrier frequencies), and had 7 channels. One could just assign any key from a standard remote to each of the channels. Besides, each channel could be configured to be a momentary change or a toggle. And all this with a 16C54 and an 93LC46 EEPROM! This code was further refined and ported on a 16C620 by TDL technology, and is available at www.zianet.com/tdl I can vouch for this design, as I had purchased the original kit from Weedertech, and was highly impressed by it. As I mentioned, the code for this is on the net. The schematic, if someone is interested, I can scan and forward.
