I am leaning this direction. It is at least light outside the box
anytime someone would be there to open the container door or remove
the top to empty it. The photosensor prices are attractive for the
application as well.

Sometimes "one off" projects are a lot more fun. You don't have to
worry about the cost of thousands of parts, just one or two.
