Do not bet on it. At one stage Sharp made a laptop with one polarity, and an
LCD overhead projector with the opposite polarity, but otherwise identical
connector. One of my colleagues had the job of telling the company salesman
that both expensive items needed repairing because they had been wrongly
plugged, about 5 minutes before important sales pitch to highly important
customer.
