Centre is often positive, but not always (I think the reason for this nonstandardness is that sockets with cutouts cut the outer connection, and people like to switch positives!). Sony seem to have sort-of standardised their ones, but then they also use nonstandard plug sizes, and also sometimes use connectors with centre pins instead of holes. The most common sizes are 2.5 and 2.1mm (pin in socket), 1.3mm is also quite common on walkmen and other small things, but there are many others - digital cameras always seem to use odd-sized ones. I'm looking at a universal brick in a catalogue which comes with SIXTEEN different plug adapters!=20 Having said, that, there actually IS a standard - EIAJ RC-5320A, based on different plug sizes for different voltage classifications, but I doubt if anything like everyone uses (or has even heard of) it. -- http://www.piclist.com hint: To leave the PICList mailto:piclist-unsubscribe-request@mitvma.mit.edu
