No virus scanner is instantly updated when a new virus comes out, so having blind faith in a virus scanner is worse then not having one. I have spoken to many people about backing up, and the most common reason for NOT backing up is "I run a virus scanner, I'm safe", which is of course completely idiotic. A virus scanner won't stop your 3 year old formatting the hard drive, a virus scanner won't prevent windows from deciding it doesn't like your drive anymore, it also won't stop a hard drive from crashing. There is a similar situation out there with "software" firewall products, I believe them to be more dangerous (because of the false sense of security) then not having one.
