Am I correct in assuming you have installed MPLAB 5.60?  The p56000.hex file
that is included with version 5.60 is the firmware to program the 18 series.
The readme file says nothing about the 18F series only the 18C. It does say
it conforms to the 18F0XX  (DS411143B) spec, which is interesting because MC
dropped the PIC18F0XX series.

I ordered an ICD2 today so I will be using it.  Maybe I should have
purchased a Pro-Mate instead of the PICstart
