The readme file for picstart plus in the new mplab (5.60) does NOT list any 18f parts, only 18c parts. Mplab lists many 18f parts. From what Kevin says: > My FAE told me the other day that the PICSTART+ didn't have enough free > space in the firmware for the 18F452 etc... It sounds like the next upgrade to picstart may well require a new chip (instead of the 17cxx chip that's in there now). I doubt that Mchip would require you to buy an ICD2 or Promate in the long run - they'll probably adapt the PS+ in some small way, but I'll bet that over the next few years we'll see more ICD and less picstart. The ICD may very well become the next hobbyist programmer, with some added advantages. The original ICD was cheaper than the picstart. We should see some homebrew 18f programmers shortly. Speaking of which, does anyone know off the top of their head if the 18f supports 5v programming like the 16f87x does? -Adam Alan B.
