Especially if you have to download them on a lousy phone line...

I average downloading about 1 message every 3 seconds, and the line drops
out maybe three times every attempt to collect mail....

A good news group will only survive if the material is concise and useful.
Once it gets to be too much trouble, many of the more useful members will
simply go away.

The best way to kill a news group is to post lots of unnecessary gumph,
html, attachments, etc.
