Don't expect that if you make a design public you will every be able to again make it private. But as several people have pointed out, you may still be able to make money by extending the software, introducing a new version or by useing the design as advertizing. But again, I think most of the list have some interesting little idea in the back of their heads that they do not see a commercial prosepect for (or don't want to bother with the commercial side of) and would like to justify spending the time to make the design.
