I used to work on Apple monitors a lot, mostly OEMed by Panasonic and Sony. There was special elaborate software that communicated with the monitor and was used to adjust the bright, sub-bright, geometry, etc. If you replaced the main controller board in some of those monitors, you had to make sure that you downloaded and backed up the monitor's configuration so that you could re-upload it onto the new board and get the settings for the individual tube, yoke, and flyback right - otherwise it was very very difficult to adjust without signal generators and other special tools. It wouldn't suprise me if there was special software.
