Hi,
To prevent transients you can use a transil SMBJ 6.5 and a small capa
like 1 nf on the power suppl line (+5Vdc) of your PIC. It's simple,
cheap and efficient=20

Which gives the best protection against
transients:

Gas dircharge tube and varistor connected in
series with each other or is it better to
connecting them in parallell across L and N ?
