We found
http://www.ftdichip.com and their very nice interface DLLs and
sample VB code and everything about a day after you posted your
reply... that will teach me to ignore the list after I've asked
it a question...

Unfortunatly, the sales people say that despite the fact that the
PIC will never keep up with it, we must have USB 2.0 to use in
the advertizing... I just love sales hype... and the ftdi's are
USB 1.1

So the search begins YET again.... sigh...
