The gap between two characters is almost (if not exactly) the width of 1 dot. If you make your bar with every other dot on and every other dot off on instead of completely solid you get 3 levels per character and a bar without gaps. The 6th bit in a character (the gap between two characters) is then always off. This will require 3 user defined characters (1 line, 2 lines and 3 lines). Hope you understand what I mean.
