Hi,
there's always the Maxim uart chips, MAX31xx something I think.
SPI, available with or without i/f level circuitry.
Fairly easy to use.
I only have issues with the really truly weird IRQ handling.
( If I recall correctly the IRQ pin behaved very strange,
i.e if an byte was received *during* spi comms it was never
re-set and one had to 'manually' check for the 'condition,
as the (pic)irq was never triggered in this case )

Anyway, apart from that issue,work as charm ( well kinda :) )
