Heck - the TI 990 systems (mid 80's) used removable disk platters on the both the T-50 "system disk" and T-200 "user" disk drives ... in case of increased error count - simply change-out a drive platter 'stack' and restore from tape. I saw that done on several occasions right back there in the computer room.
