Well anyway, as for "why?"
I would say it has something to do with .... conversion chart printers
lobbyists.
As for conversion in the US, everyone I know (engineering) has charts stuck,
hung up, in a drawer, all over the place.
With my tools, I always keep in mind that
13mm ~ 1/2"
11mm ~ 7/16"
19mm ~ 3/4"
and my crescent wrench is metric on one side and "American" on the other.
