Change the bulbs for 220/8 ~= 28V bulbs and add a diode in series with
each bulb (1N4004 or higher). The mains must be rectified full wave but
not filtered for this to work. You will have a hot chassis. If you pick a
scan frequency that is related to mains the display will show waves of
light. The bulbs will blow all the time if you do not provide some sort of
current limiting.
