Hmm, I was given to understand the original term was POME "Prisoner of
Mother England" from which is derived the modern term Pommie.

If anyone ever gets the chance to go to Australia, do visit Adelaide, where
they are most proud that theirs is the only major city not started as a
penal colony :) There is also still a central park around the original city
area that is so wide a cannon cannot shoot a cannon ball across it, that was
the criteria when what is now a park was set up as part of the city
defences.
