mpasm will run in a dos window as well as under dos only. Read or print the manual from Windows before that (especially the command line options). You set the file type it produces using the f= option in the list directive. Under MPLAB this defaults to .cod but you can specify inhx8m inhx16 or inhx32 (inhx16 is no longer supported apparently).
