(A Brokaw cell is one type of band-gap reference circuit).

An excellent practical introduction to band-gap references is given by Nat
Semi at

This includes (and tends to concentrate on) the Brokaw cell but also a
number of other band-gap implementations. If you are more interested in the
result than the specific method then you may find something useful here. I
do like the utter simplicity of the "brute force" diode string approach
although you do need more than 5 volts to implement it.
