Looks worse on paper than it really is. 5 ICs and a handful
of passives, would fit on a pretty small double-sided PCB

You know that each RFID tag has its own unique serial
number, as set by the factory ? Therefore no need to program
it with any information at all if simply identifying an item (eg
train or wagon) is what you want to do
