I wouldn't recommend entering values in code unless it's a last resort, but I've had to do it before - for the same reasons as you. At the point where you want to insert the sim value, just do a MOVLW (value) followed by MOVWF PORTA. If you're just trying to change certain bits, pin and async also work well.
