I'm not sure whether you want the sound or the project, but I recall some fellows in England did this about 2 years ago. They offered it up as a product and if I recall correctly they used a PIC as the front panel controller. All seems very fuzzy right at the moment .... if I remember the site, and they're still around, I'll post again.
