BX was banned from NYC, also in the 70's - it was widely used for that reason, but NY Electricians couldn't cut the armor without nicking the inner jackets and shorting it out. Same few years as aluminum to copper wiring....Homes and buildings built in the 70's in the US, NY especially - is often aggravating to RE agents because inspections reveal these two problems - usually just before closing.
