It almost seems as if there's some sort of bulk erase being
done, but that's simply not possible in a routine that doesn't
have any kind of loop or repetitive call on the EEPROM. I've
tried two PICs with the same result. Obviously I'm reluctant
to point the finger at my code, but it must be the culprit. That
said, I'm still not 100% confident about the programming
regime on the F628. Never had problems with the F84
