A quick word of thanks to dale@botkin.org would be a good (minimal) start. If you feel moved to do more, there is the hall of fame at http://www.piclist.com/techref/piclist/support.htm It just so happens that Dale is a verified premier PayPal member. And I just fixed all the links on that page... again... damn PayPal keeping changing the system. Enjoy the list while you have it... I don't see it lasting much longer. At least not without some more effort on the part of its members (read: volunteer to help admin, or make it more rewarding) and I have no faith that our status at MIT will hold. I donate 50% of any proceeds from the sale of a PICList T-shirt or mug to them. The rest should go to help pay for the bandwidth that piclist.com sucks up, but instead I funnel it into the new server. To date, guess how many list members have shown any interest in T-shirts or Mugs? To be fair, a few people have donated to the fund for a new server (which by the way, has been running in its new home for about a week with no burps and will be taking over archive searches as soon as I figure out directory replication over pptp) and a very few people have made BIG ($100-$500) donations. But as with the content of the list itself, a few people carry the burden for the rest. If you haven't done something to help, and you want the list to keep on, "don't just do something, sit there." At least say thanks to MIT and Dale. --- James Newton, webmaster piclist.com (former Admin #3) mailto:jamesnewton@piclist.com 1-619-652-0593 VM 1-208-279-8767 FAX PIC/PICList FAQ: http://www.piclist.com or .org -----Original Message----- From: Chris Loiacono [mailto:chris@mail2asi.com] Sent: Tuesday, February 05, 2002 13:46 To: jamesnewton@piclist.com; PIClist (E-mail) Subject: RE: [ADMIN]: I'm not REALLY a jerk (was Re: [PIC]:Hamming codes) Importance: Low Understood. My it's suddenly quiet in here.... I can't imagine the effort it takes to keep the list going. Many thanks and hats off to you, James and Dale. To have to deal with this aggravation during the same week that you realized you were in the process of getting ripped-off must be an extra bummer. Post a snail mail address please, Dale. We would all like to send gifts of thanks. Isn't that right everyone? (no anthrax jokes, please!) BTW, I am not related to either Dale or James... Admin 3 Sent: Tuesday, February 05, 2002 10:16 AM To: PICLIST@MITVMA.MIT.EDU Subject: [ADMIN]: I'm not REALLY a jerk (was Re: [PIC]:Hamming codes) Importance: High Mr. Kelly, (and other list members) after reading all of the below, do you now understand what happened and why? Do you see the Dale was doing his job and that you have been placed in a bad position due to the incompetence of your ISP and NOT by Dale or any other member of the PICList? If you don't understand this, please explain why and I will try to explain it again. BTW: I never got the email you apparently sent to me (the one that started "It's with GREAT DISMAY"...) Apparently your ISP ate it. I would personally recommend getting a free email account with Yahoo or hotmail or whatever. They do know how to run an email server. As a matter of fact, Dale is working on sending me a *nix box that I will pay hosting fees to connect to the internet and I hope to be able to use it to host email for people who are PICList members. You might be able to use that box. Finally, We are VERY indebted to Dale for putting up with a lot of pressure from MIT and their list server admins regarding the volume of deliver errors caused by people with ISPs like yours which has enabled us to keep the list running. They feel that we had too many errors and were going to close the PICList as a result. Let me say that again: The PICList exists today because Dale spend a butt load of his personal time with NO 'efing thanks from anyone doing exactly what he did to your account. Hello? Is anyone hearing that? The PICList almost got shut off and Dale saved it. Period. I should have said something about that to the list much earlier. Dale deserves all our gratitude. Tell him so. I want to make this a public statement because the same thing may happen to other list members as a result of a mess up at their ISP. If it does, yell at your ISP, not at Dale. -- http://www.piclist.com hint: To leave the PICList mailto:piclist-unsubscribe-request@mitvma.mit.edu
