I don't think it was a myth, too many people with good ears say that, and it wasn't the tubes it was the transformers in most cases. What I had in mind was oscillator and other RF stage damping (by putting diodes directly on the tank circuit) and signal former circuits where the Ge has a nice (?) quadratic curve vs. a much sharper knee for Shottky.
