It's one of those things which you don't really "need" that frequently, but when you do need it, it has this magical ability to transform the deeply mysterious into the blatantly obvious. An oscilloscope can save a **LOT** of time and frustration. Unless you're doing a lot of high-speed digital work, though, I don't think getting a scope with wide bandwidth gets you much added troubleshooting power.
