One of my hobbies is building and flying RC airplanes which are electric powered vs. gas or glow fuel. Keith Shaw, one of the "Top Guns" of the electric RC community wrote an article on building soldered NiCd battery packs a while back. A PDF version of the article is available on the EFO website here... http://members.aol.com/KMyersEFO/makepack.pdf I've built a lot of packs both large and small that have been flying for years in many cases. Soldered packs are definitely possible if you follow Keith's advice. I believe the reason many sources advise against it is that too much heat will kill the battery. It's important to use the correct size iron and tips that will transfer the heat quickly and efficiently. These same techniques work equally as well on smaller NiMH cells used in little planes.
