Some ad-ware programs are known to crash the explorer interface (ie, losing tray icons). Make sure you have the latest XP compatible drivers for your hardware, especially graphics cards. Other than that, I'd suggest you do a clean install and only install programs you use regularily, avoid installing ad-ware programs. Upgrades from earlier windows... Ugh!
