IMHO the resistor should take the pin to the LED's off-state, ie pull the pin high if LED (anode to Vcc, cathode to pin) current is sink, pull the pin low (LED anode to pin, cathode to 0V) if current is source. A pull-down with the way you have the LED now (sink) will use unnecessary power, as the off-state is with the pin high.
