An [EE]: tag would be valid on this. Search for "T Codes" invented / discovered by Dr Mark Tichener (spelling) of Auckland University about a decade ago. These are AFAIR (although I have never used them) self synchronising, self clocking and resynchronise after an error in optimal time. I have a friend who has a PhD from studying one aspect of them - I can refer you to him if needs be but see what you find independently first.
