Really a new topic so I've changed the heading. FYI Have a look at the Analog Devices AD6523/AD6524 Othello GSM RF chipset. While NO GSM design from scratch is a trivial matter this "new generation" concept greatly simplifies the practical aspects of the RF side. They use direct conversion and eliminate various SAW filters etc. The phone side uses AD6521/AD6522. Add a 1 MBit SRAM, FLASH, some glue, and user I/O "and a little software" :-) and you have a phone.
