The PIC for the USB to serial interface sounds like a good idea.  But what
would he use to program the PIC to do the interfacing :-)

Well the obvious answer is to get a USB/serial converter.

Another interesting idea is to build an interface using a 16C745 PIC with
a builtin USB interface. Since it has both a USB and a builtin USART, a
translator between the two should be a fairly easy task.
