I've used the free 'comshow' from this site:

Very clean and functional, one can setup an predefined string
of *any* ( i.e. full range 0x00-0xFF ) characters to send at command.
Shows all received characters ( yeh even CR, LF and the likes )
Ofcource there's an downside, DOS based :)
