It has a lot more capability in the same form factor at a significantly cheaper price ($6.00 vs. $3.88 US according to DigiKey) I think that the 16F877/16F628 debate depends on the task. You can definitely be penny wise for a small project, where speed nor timer accuracy are not critical. I've even worked out a ICSP extension to my Trivial LVP programmer so that the target can be programmed and run in place. I haven't had a chance to draw it up and post it yet though. The programmer can be found here: http://www.finitesite.com/d3jsys > And for the best compiler, if we would agree on that there would be only > one.... That being said, Wouter is somewhat remiss by not mentioning JAL: http://www.xs4all.nl/~wf/wouter/pic/jal which is Wouter's cool little language for programming Microcontrollers. It has an extensive library of tools from bitbanging serial to controlling LCD displays. If you don't have 'C' attached at the hip, it's worth checking out. My language, NPCI, is a developing work in progress. You can check out the language overview on my PIC page listed above.
