The main reason I placed diodes at both ends was because I had 7 feet of cable going from the driver to the motor. Even with diodes at the motor I was still getting inductive spikes at the driver end. I ran V+, GND and two winding pairs to the motor using a 6 core mains supply cable. The supply and drive to the motors was 38V @ 2A continuous. Another addition to the drive circuit was a Zobel Network across each motor winding. This cuts down high frequency spikes and RF noise.
