A company I once worked fro was a dealer for Best Power (http://www.bestpower.com) who made on-line UPS systems... they worked that way. They also make the FERRUPS line, which IIRC uses a ferroresonant transformer in the input stage. Kick-butt UPS boxes at the time, don't know what they're doing now.
