Why couldn't there be an EEPROM in the cart which is written to by the printer after every actuation of the printhead? In other words, the EEPROM could contain a number, say 1 million, and it would be decremented after each "squirt" from the printhead and when it reaches zero, the printer no longer accepts the cart? This would mean that the cart couldn't be reused, even in another printer.
