The answer is no but if you are getting garbage it might be worth trying a
different PC (from a different manufacturer). A Toshiba laptop I once used
to interface to a PIC (via Max232) didn't seem to like the RS232-C levels
it was presented with. Sometimes it would work.....sometimes it produced
rubbish - it was very marginal.
