This sounds cool but, for us low tech people who still use cable... TiVo is far from a flop. They are a very strong company in this poor economy. They have over 250,000 paying customers. There are also TiVo look alikes popping up like Microsoft's version. Much as I dislike Bill Gates' company, I don't think he would involve himself in a technology that is a flop! I have had TiVo for almost a year now and I don't know how I ever lived without it. I have a very short attension span (typical american ;-)) I'm constantly saying "What did they say?" TiVo allows me to go back and find out and then skip over the comercail to catch up. I also never miss my favorite programs. TiVo records all my favorite shows no matter what channel they come on or what time they're on. I get all of the reruns that I haven't seen and the ones I have I simply erase. Having TiVo is like having a DVD recorder instead of a VHS recorder. It's random access instead of serial access. I get a menu of all of the programs it has recorded and I can pick and choose among them and skip to my favorite part or pick up from where I left off. When my son says "I want to watch Scooby Doo" It's there in an instanty instead of fumbling around to find a tape. I can't say enough about TiVo. I'd rather have a TiVo box and a 9" TV than a 52" TV without it! I suppose if I didn't have TiVo, I would spend more time playing with PICs but, on the other hand, TiVo can record the program I want to watch while I finish up my project and I can go watch any time it's convenient.
