There's a shareware app called "winhex" that you can download at cnet, etc.
The unregistered version only stops you from writing modified data back to
the disk, so it's great for just reading the raw data, and checking things
out.  I've been using it extensively while working on my PIC/CompactFlash
stuff, to get the pic to read/write to the FAT filesystem.
