I have used it at 9600 baud. I couldn't get reliable transfers with
multiple byte packets. I could only send a byte [ACK], send a byte
[ACK], etc.

If you are getting reliable transfers, warm the chip slightly with a
heat gun, or cool it below room temp and see what happens.
