We designed a couple products around the Dallas RamPort, which is a battery backed RAM with built in latches to latch out the addresses. They then discontinued it. I don't use single sourced Dallas parts any more. Of course, then Maxim bought Dallas, but I've never had that problem (yet) with Maxim...
