I used to use a program by Joan Riff called (as I recall) DIAGS.EXE, which
also allowed use with two serial ports as a serial monitor. It had a number
of other cool capabilities, including monitoring the individual signals on
the LPT port.

    Sophisticated and powerful diagnostics for the serial port, video
    controller, parallel port, plus more.  Can be used as a line monitor
    if you have two serial ports.
