As per page 490 of the guidebook, request gets a string.  The calculator
is trying to be helpful and switches to string mode since that is what
that function is for.

I can't think of another function off the top of my head that will do
what you want, but there are dialog box functions that should work.  I
know that most functions don't turn on the alpha input.  You were
unlucky in picking the wrong one this time.  :-)
