Thanks for the reply.  What I did not make clear is that I loaded a cad
program from a JAZ disk, ran the program (didn't like it) and then went to
use my usual cad program.  That is when I noticed the CDROM having trouble.
Seemed to take multiple reads to get the data.  Then quit.  No spin, no
lights, just dead.

Just seemed very coincidental, and I have little faith in the integrity of
Windows 98.

  I wasn't sure if the functionality (spin and lights) was under control of
an embedded micro in the drive itself, or commanded by the operating
system.  It is several years old with at least 1000hours on it.  So, I
guess it is time for a new one.

What other time would the cdrom fail other than when it's being used?
 Chances are a belt broke, and the cd no longer spins.  Put a cd in, the
first thing you should hear is it spinning up.  If not, then it's bad.

You might try another cd, and you might try a lens cleaning cd if you
find that it does spin the cd up.  If it's older than a few years, then
open it up and see if you can replace the drive belt.  Newer models have
direct drive, so if there's no belt, then the motor is probably gone.
