What other time would the cdrom fail other than when it's being used? Chances are a belt broke, and the cd no longer spins. Put a cd in, the first thing you should hear is it spinning up. If not, then it's bad. You might try another cd, and you might try a lens cleaning cd if you find that it does spin the cd up. If it's older than a few years, then open it up and see if you can replace the drive belt. Newer models have direct drive, so if there's no belt, then the motor is probably gone. -Adam Scott F.
